Comunidad

Since 1986 St. Matthew’s Parish has had a well-developed outreach to lesbian and gay Catholics, which we call Comunidad. An operating council of leaders serve one year terms and plan interesting topical meetings and coordinate Communidad’s other activities, which include food and monetary donations to those in need at Christmas, support of the Long Beach AIDS walk, representaion at the Long Beach Pride festival, and an annual spiritual retreat that takes place in the fall. The coordinating council also maintains contact and coordinates activities with similar ministries at other parishes in the Archdiocese and with other nearby churches of other faiths.

Meetings take place on the first Tuesday of the month in the Parish hall at 7:00 p.m.

Our next general meeting: Comunidad’s Annual New Year’s Mass

Please join us for Mass on Tuesday, January 8th at 7:00 p.m. in the Church, where our presider will be Fr. Jerry. Please note that, though we ordinarily meet on the first Tuesday of the month, our January meeting will take place on the second Tuesday of the month. Our annual Mass is a chance for us to gather together in prayer as we start another year of lesbian and gay outreach ministry. Our social, which normally is held before monthly events, will be held in the parish hall after Mass. Feel free to bring family and friends and, if you can, a dessert to share. Most of all, be part of Comunidad as we begin our twenty-second year of ministry!

Election Results & New Steering Committee for 2008

Last month, Comunidad members voted in new officers and at-large members to the Steering Committee, who will each serve during the 2008 calendar year. At the January member meeting, which will be held on Tuesday, January 8th at 7:00p, you’ll have chance to meet the 2008 Steering Committee, which will be lead by Chris Carpenter, Chair, and Ray Ramirez, Co-chair.

Christmas Collection

The Christmas Collection was a great success—with St. Matthew’s parishioners donating a total of $2,793! To those that gave, thank you very much for your generosity. The money has been distributed through Catholic Charities to needy families from St. Matthew’s Parish. Also, Thanks to everyone who collected donations after weekend masses during the first three weekends of Advent. Because of the hard work of Marilyn Pires, our organizer, and all of our volunteers and donors, we were able to offer 20% more funds to this annual charitable event than we did last year.

2008 NACDLG Gay & Lesbian Conference

The National Association of Catholic Diocesan Lesbian & Gay Ministries (NACDLGM) will hold its 2008 National Conference in Long Beach on September 18-21 on the Queen Mary. Please save these dates and register for the weekend, which is sure to edify your intellect as well as your spirit. James Alison & Teresa DeCrescenzo are confirmed speakers for the conference. Wear Your Colors!

Please wear your Comunidad tee-shirt or Polo shirt on the Sunday before our first Tuesday meeting each month. Our next “Comunidad Sunday” is January 6th, 2008 (due to our January meeting taking place on Tuesday, Jaunary 8th). Many of us gather at the 10:30 a.m. mass, but show your colors at whichever mass you attend. If you don’t have a Comunidad polo shirt or tee-shirt, call Tony (562) 439-0531 to purchase one. Medium, Large, XL, and XXL sizes are all available for $10.00.

If you can’t make one of these events, hopefully we’ll see you at our next scheduled general meeting, Tuesday, Feb. 5th., at which Vanessa Romain from Long Beach Pride will be our speaker.
